International Advanced Vitreooretinal
Surgery Course (IAVRSC) was initially
conceptualized as an update on the frontiers
of the ever-expanding field of vitreoretinal
surgery. The first meet was held at Mumbai from
19th – 21st October, 1993 and was attended
by stalwarts like R Zivojnovic, Stanley Chang,
Claus Eckardt, Yannick Le Mer, Fumitaka Ando,
SS Badrinath, Lingam Gopal, Tarun Sharma, PN
Nagpal and many others. For the first time in
India, there was a gathering of so many experts
in the field under one roof to enlighten practicing
retina specialists, general and budding ophthalmologists.
After 5 such events, IAVRSC ventured out of
Mumbai to Chennai in south India in 2003, when
the VIth course collaborated with the Silver
Jubilee celebrations of Sankara Nethralaya,
the renowned Eye Hospital. The event being held
every alternate year, not only has it served
its initial purpose, but it has proliferated
into a discussion forum for the most recent
developments in the treatment of Vitreo-retinal
and Uveal diseases. No wonder, it has become
an important fixture in the calendar of every
retina specialist in the country.
For the first time in its history IAVRSC
was hosted outside India in the year 2008. It
was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
in collaboration with Tun Hussein One National
eye Hospital.
The 9th IAVRSC is to be held
in ARMY MUSEUM,Stockholm,Sweden in 2010
from September 18th to 19th
by Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital , Mumbai

surgical techniques, breakthrough discoveries
